Italian bishop scrubs plans to meet with gay activists October 18, 2007
Bishop Franco Agostinelli of Grosseto, Italy, pulled out of plans to visit with members of the homosexual activist group Arcigay on Wednesday evening, October 17.
Bishop Agostinelli had intended to meet with Arcigay members quietly, but reconsidered his plan when news of the meeting was made public in the local media. His visit would have been the first occasion on which an Italian bishop met with Arcigay members.
"My gesture was to have been a sign of welcome," the bishop explained, but "not one of recognition for Arcigay." When the meeting plans were aired publicly, he said, he could not go through with the meeting without implying support for the group.
