Early World Youth Day registrations exceed goals September 04, 2007
World Youth Day (WYD) organizers report that registrations for the July 2008 festivities in Sydney, Australia, are running well ahead of schedule, with over 180,000 young people already having made plans to attend.
To date some 50,710 Australians have registered for WYD, organizers report. With well over 120,000 foreign visitors already enrolled, Danny Casey, the head of the organizing committee, remarked: "We appear to have exceeded our target for international visitors." The US has provided the largest number of foreign registrations, with over 36,000. Italy is next with nearly 19,000, followed by Germany (9,500) and New Zealand (6,000). WYD organizers expect about 500,000 people to participate in at least one activity during the July observance.
