Lawyers for Archbishop Ncube ask for detailed charges August 28, 2007

Lawyers representing Archbishop Pius Ncube have asked Zimbabwe's high court to furnish the prelate with the details of adultery charges that have been lodged against him.

Archbishop Ncube has been accused of an adulterous relationship with a women who worked as his secretary. But the archbishop's legal team notes that his accuser, the woman's estranged husband, has not provided details about the alleged relationship. The lawyers are asking the court to force disclosure of those details, so that they can prepare an adequate defense.

State-run newspapers and television stations in Zimbabwe have given prominent coverage to photos and videotapes that allegedly show the archbishop in compromising positions with his secretary and with other women. The archbishop's defenders charge that the photos and tapes may have been doctored and that the man they depict cannot be positively identified.

Archbishop Ncube has been the country's most prominent critic of the authoritarian government led by President Robert Mugabe. His supporters believe that the archbishop has been the object of a massive propaganda campaign, intended to attack his integrity and undermine his public influence.
