Catholic schools too expensive, bishop says August 20, 2007

An Australian Catholic bishop has said that declining enrollments in parochial school are attributable to high tuition costs, which make it impossible for many Catholic families to take advantage of a Catholic education.

"The poorer classes are not frequenting our schools," observed Bishop Kevin Manning of Parramatta. Catholic families with limited financial resources are forced to send their children to the public schools, he said.

The net result, the bishop continued, is that many families do not enjoy the benefits of a Catholic education, while at the same time the drop in enrollment creates new pressure on the schools to raise fees, thereby aggravating the problem.
