Cardinal Zen meets with Pope on Chinese reaction July 23, 2007
Cardinal Joseph Zen of Hong Kong, the most visible Catholic prelate in China, was in Lorenzago di Cadore this past weekend, meeting with Pope Benedict XVI.
Cardinal Zen attended the Holy Father's Angelus audience on Sunday, July 22, in the remote Italian town where the Pontiff is vacationing. The cardinal was leading a pilgrimage of about 60 Chinese Catholics to Italy.
The appearance of Cardinal Zen at the papal audience drew the attention of reporters, especially in light of the Pope's message to the Church in China, released on June 30. Church spokesmen confirmed that although the Pope has held few private audiences during his vacation, he did talk with Cardinal Zen about the Chinese reaction to his message.
