Polish journalist loses job for misquoting archbishop July 04, 2007

A journalist for the Polish Press Agency has been fired after he misquoted a homily by the president of the Polish bishops' conference, Archbishop Jozef Michalik of Przemysl.

In his coverage of the homily, Jan Miszczak, wrote that the archbishop criticized the governing Law and Justice Party for failing an examination of conscience. However Archbishop Michalik had actually included both the government and the opposition party in his criticism, saying, “The current governing party and the opposition party have failed an examination of conscience and of ethics, not defending or promoting life or the family.”

Miszczak claims that he had not intended to manipulate the archbishop’s speech for political purposes.
