Pope encourages adult stem-cell research June 27, 2007
Pope Benedict XVI encouraged scientific exploration on the uses of stem cells obtained by morally licit means, during his public audience on June 27.
At the conclusion of his prepared remarks, the Holy Father recognized the members of the audience who were attending an international symposium at the La Sapienza university in Rome. The symposium is discussing the research done with stem cells obtained from adult tissue.
In stem-cell research, as in scientific work generally, the Church supports the pursuit of knowledge and medical progress through every morally legitimate means, the Pope explained. He said: "On this matter the position of the Church, supported by reason and by science, is clear: scientific research must be encouraged and promoted, so long as it does not harm other human beings, whose dignity is inviolable from the very first stages of existence."
