Iraq, life issues on agenda when Pope meets Bush June 04, 2007
Pope Benedict XVI will discuss “the major ethical and social issues” of today with US President George W. Bush during their meeting on June 9, the Vatican Secretary of State has disclosed.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone told the daily newspaper Avvenire that the Pope, in his first meeting with the American leader, will speak about the war in Iraq, giving special emphasis to the difficulties that Christians now face in that country.
Although the Vatican has been consistently critical of American policy toward Iraq, Cardinal Bertone suggested that the Pope sees President Bush as an ally in the worldwide struggle to protect the dignity of life. The cardinal told Avvenire that the American leader is “particularly distinguished for several positive initiatives in favor of the defense of life from the time of conception.”
