Tony Blair to visit Pope before leaving office May 24, 2007

British Prime Minister Tony Blair will visit Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican before he leaves office in June.

A spokesman for the British leader confirmed that Blair plans to speak with the Pope about "interfaith" issues before he steps down, and mentions that Blair will also visit Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi during his visit to Rome.

Nevertheless the plans for the trip are sure to spark further speculation about the possibility that Blair will enter the Catholic Church after his resignation.

Informed sources in Rome report that the Pope will receive Blair in a private audience on June 2. The Vatican has not officially confirmed the visit.
