Religious groups demand US action on global warming May 22, 2007
American Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic groups have joined in a public statement demanding government action to combat global warming.
"We are mobilizing a religious force that will persuade our legislators to take immediate action to curb greenhouse gases," said a coalition of more than 20 religious organizations, in an open letter to Congress that was released May 22. "Global warming is real, it is human-induced and we have the responsibility to act," the religious leaders announced.
The open letter, which appeared in newsletters that circulate on Washington's Capitol Hill, was signed by leaders of the National Council of Churches, the Islamic Society of North America, and the political arm of the Reform branch of Judaism. It was endorsed by leaders of the Episcopal Church, United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, Alliance of Baptists, and African Methodist Episcopal Church.
