Brazilian soccer superstar excited by papal visit May 09, 2007
"I'm really excited and proud to think the Pope's going to my country." Those were the words of Ronaldo, the soccer superstar who now plays for AC Milan.
"Brazil has many resources, but also many problems," Ronald said. "The Holy Father's words will be a comfort and support to our people, and to the entire Church in South America."
Ronaldo, who grew up in Rio de Janeiro, once was introduced to Pope John Paul II, who in his youth was an avid amateur soccer player. The Brazilian star said that he hopes to meet Pope Benedict as well-- perhaps the next time the Pontiff travels to his native country.
