Vatican court hands down first drug-possession sentence May 07, 2007

The Vatican's criminal court has handed down its first conviction for possession of illegal drugs.

A former Vatican employee received a 4-month sentence after a Vatican court found him guilty of drug possession. The sentence was suspended, court officials announced.

According to the Italian daily La Repubblica, about a 3-ounce packet of cocaine was discovered in the man's desk at the Vatican. The defendant, who had already been dismissed from his job at the Vatican when his case came to trial, confessed to using cocaine but pleaded innocent of selling the drug.
