Palestinian leader meets with Pontiff April 24, 2007
Pope Benedict XVI met on April 24 with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority.
After the brief meeting, the Vatican issued a statement confirming that the discussion had centered on the continuing crisis in the Holy Land, with the Pope praising "the commitment - thanks also to the help of the international community - to relaunch the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians."
The Pope also spoke with his guest about "the difficulties faced by Catholics" in Palestinian territory, the Vatican said.
After his meeting with the Pontiff, the Palestinian leader-- popularly known as Abu Mazen-- met with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Secretary of State, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, the Secretary for Relations with States.
Abbas is in Europe for a series of meetings with political leaders, hoping to end an embargo on foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority. While in Rome he met with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and his foreign minister, Massimo D'Alema.
