French doctors rally behind euthanasia appeal March 09, 2007
The French weekly Nouvel Observateur has published an appeal for the legalization of euthanasia.
The appeal demands the release of a doctor and nurs who have been accused of killing cancer patients. Their trial, which is scheduled to begin next week, could lead to sentences of up to 30 years in prison.
Dr. Denis Labaye, who has organized a public campaign on behalf of the defendants, reports that he has the support of over 2,000 French hospital staff members who admit that they have deliberately caused the death of terminal patients.
The general secretary of the European Doctors’ Council opposed the appeal for the accused doctor’s release. “Doctors should defend life, even if it is difficult,” said Lisette Tipdins. “The solution to the problems is better end-of-life care for sick patients, not their death.”
