Pope asks prayers for trip to Turkey November 27, 2006
Pope Benedict XVI asked the faithful to pray for the success of his voyage to Turkey during his Angelus audience on Sunday, November 26.
Two days before embarking on an apostolic trip that will include stops in Ankara, Ephesus, and Istanbul, the Holy Father asked for prayers "that this pilgrimage might yield the fruits that God desires." He said that he was praying for the intercession of predecessors, Popes John Paul II and Paul VI, and particularly Pope John XXIII, who is still beloved in Turkey, having served for a decade (1935- 1944) as the papal delegate there.
The Pope sent his "cordial greetings" to the people of Turkey, and said that he felt "deep emotion" at the opportunity to meet with the small Christian community there and "to unite myself fraternally with the Orthodox Church for the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle," on November 30."
As he concluded his remarks to the Sunday audience, Pope Benedict observed that the annual World AIDS Day will be observed December 1. He asked for "greater responsibility responsibility in the treatment of the illness, and a commitment to prevent all discrimination against those afflicted by it."
