Pope leads last rites for Curial cardinal October 20, 2006
Pope Benedict XVI presided at the funeral of Cardinal Mario Francesco Pompedda, a prominent retired official of the Roman Curia, in St. Peter’s basilica on Friday, October 20.
Cardinal Pompedda, the former prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, had died on October 18 at the age of 77. The Holy Father paid homage to the influential canonist, noting with sorrow that during his last months he had been virtually incapacitated by illness.
The Italian prelate, well known for his liberal stances on a number of current issues, had been the dean of the Roman Rota, then president of the appeals court for Vatican City, and finally the prefect of supreme tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. He drafted the apostolic exhortation Dominici Gregis, governing the leadership of the Holy See after the death of a Pope and the procedures for a conclave.
