Pope Benedict recalls "engaging simplicity" of John Paul I October 09, 2006
After attending a Sunday-night screening of a film on the life of Pope John Paul I, Pope Benedict XVI praised the memory of the short-lived Pontiff who was "strong in the faith, firm in his principles, but always ready to welcome with a smile."
The Italian state television network RAI had produced the film, entitled Papa Luciani, il sorriso di Dio (Pope Luciani, the smile of God), 28 years after the sudden death of the Pontiff who had reigned for only 33 days.
Cardinal Albino Luciani, the Patriarch of Venice, was elected on August 26, 1978, to succeed Pope Paul VI. He died barely over one month later, on September 28, of a heart attack. A diocesan inquiry into the cause for his beatification is scheduled to conclude on November 11, sending the case to the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
After watching the film biography of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI remarked that Pope John Paul I had been a "master of truth and zealous catechist" who preached with "customary engaging simplicity."
