Church has a role to guide other faiths: Cardinal Bertone September 13, 2006

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the incoming Vatican Secretary of State, told an Italian newspaper that the Catholic Church has a role in persuading other faiths to embrace a culture of life.

In an interview with Il Messagero, Cardinal Bertone said that the speech delivered by Pope Benedict XVI in Regensburg on September 13, condemning the use of violence in religious "holy wars," was an example of this approach.

"Addressing the world's other religious faiths is part of the Church's misson," the Italian prelate said. "We must all return to the original source of human life, which is love." Cardinal Bertone will officially take office on September 15 as the Vatican's Secretary of State. He is replacing Cardinal Angelo Sodano, who is spending his last days in that role accompanying the Pope on his visit to Bavaria.
