Vatican Officials Rap Coptic Anti-Israel Remarks April 01, 1997
Vatican (CWN) -- Although there was no official comment from the Holy See, Vatican sources privately expressed profound distaste for a statement issued last week by the head of the Coptic Church, Pope Shenouda III, who had condemned the Jewish people as "the enemy of Christians and Muslims." Speaking in Cairo-- the capital of a country which has been marred by the violence caused by Islamic fundamentalists-- the Coptic leader lashed out at the Israeli government, which he described as "totalitarian, ferocious--against which we must unite." In a particularly inflammatory passage, Shenouda said that "the Jews are sacking our holy places and demolishing our Holy Land."
