Catholic publisher pulls Charlotte Church recordings July 21, 2006
The California-based Catholic publisher Ignatius Press has stopped selling all recordings by Charlotte Church, after the singer blasphemed the Eucharist and referred to the Pope as a "Nazi" on her television show.
"It is with regret that we do this," Ignatius Press announced. "Miss Church possesses a great gift from God, and in the past she has used her talent often to offer praise and glory to our Lord." But the statement added that the San Francisco publisher "cannot stand by a young woman who uses her stature in the media to mock the Eucharist, slander the Holy Father, and denigrate the vows of religious women."
Charlotte Church, a Welsh singer who rose to prominence in the 1990s as a teenage performer with "the voice of an angel," shocked her fans when she introduced her own television show in London last week. Ignatius Press, which had featured her earlier recordings, announced that it would "immediately withdraw all compact discs, cassette tapes, DVDs and VHS tapes that feature Miss Church. Please join us in praying for this troubled young woman."
