Australian prelate reportedly opposes lectures by controversial Irish priest June 30, 2006
The Archbishop of Melbourne, Australia, has withdrawn permission for a series of lectures by a controversial Irish priest, according to a report on an Australian internet site.
Archbishop Denis Hart reportedly told the Christian Brothers who administer the Edmund Rice Centre that he could not endorse an appearance by Father Diarmuid O'Murchu. According to a report on the Cathnews site, the archbishop took action because Father O'Murchu is being investigated by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Father O'Murchu, a psychologist and author of books including Quantum Theology, has argued that the Church has been hampered throughout history by "the preservation of patriarchal and centralized structures and beliefs." He seeks to "bring the planetary-cosmic aspect into conscious awareness," and argues that this development will create a better sense of harmony between man and nature and recapture "much of our sacred story from which we have been culturally and religiously severed for at least the past 5,000 years."
