1 million young Polish Catholics hear Pope's encouragement May 27, 2006

About 1 million young Polish Catholics gathered in Krakow's Blonie Park on Saturday evening, May 27, to meet Pope Benedict XVI.

The Holy Father gave his young audience a message of encouragement, telling them that they should not be discouraged by the people who reject the claims of Jesus Christ. The apostle Peter faced the same problem, the Pope reminded his audience, when St. Peter referred to Christ as the "living stone rejected by men."

Young Christians should build their lives on that stone foundation, the Pope said, and must not be discouraged by opposition. He acknowledged that today Christ is often mocked, and many people find it unacceptable to speak of the Gospel in public. Nevertheless, he told his audience: "Do not be afraid to build you life in the Church in with the Church," conscious that the Church alone promises the means of obtaining full happiness.

Pope Benedict appeared fully relaxed in his last public appearance of the day, at ease with his young audience and amused by their frequent interruptions with applause and appreciative chants. As he concluded his audience, he heard the traditional Polish chant of "Sto lat!" ("May you live 100 years.")
