Vatican official named US bishop; new hint of Curia reform? April 25, 2006
The third-ranking official of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Msgr. Frank Dewane, has been appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Venice, Florida.
The Vatican has not named a replacement for the American priest, who has served as undersecretary of the Pontifical Council since 2002. His departure is likely to stimulate new speculation about a possible "consolidation" of offices in the Roman Curia.
In March, Pope Benedict announced that the Pontifical Council for Migrants would be brought under the presidency of Cardinal Renato Martino, alongside the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. At the same time the Pope also combined the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue with the Pontifical Council for Culture, with Cardinal Paul Poupard serving as president of both. Although these moves were described as temporary, there have been persistent reports that Pope Benedict plans to trim the number of different offices in the Curia, combining offices that have related functions.
During his March 23 meeting with the College of Cardinals, the Holy Father asked for comments on the prospects for reform of the Roman Curia. The discussion at that meeting was confidential, and no plans have leaked in the subsequent month.
