New Coptic Catholic Patriarch chosen April 03, 2006

The Coptic Catholic Church has elected a new Patriarch.

Meeting in Cairo, the Coptic Synod of Bishops chose Bishop Antonios Naguib as the new Patriarch of Alexandria. He replaces Patriarch Stephanos II Ghattas, who stepped down at the age of 86.

Under the Code of Canon Law for the Eastern Churches, the resignation of a patriarch can be accepted by the Synod of Bishops for that Church, meeting after consultation with the Holy See. The Synod then elects his successor. The new patriarch then addresses the Pope directly to ensure a continuation of full communion with Rome.

Patriarch Antonios Naguib was born in Egypt in 1935 and ordained to the Coptic Catholic priesthood in 1960. He became Bishop of Minya, Egypt, in 1987, and remained in that post until resigning in 2002. He has remained as Bishop Emeritus of Minya until his election as Patriarch.

The election of the new Coptic Patriarch was announced by the Vatican press office on April 3.
