World Food Program head praises Church efforts March 13, 2006

James Morris, the director of the UN's World Food Program, praised Church efforts to address the problem of hunger, during a March 13 audience with Pope Benedict XVI.

In a statement released by the World Food Program after the meeting, Morris spoke of the "extraordinary work" by Catholic individuals and organizations throughout the world.

Noting that leaders of "all the world's great religions" have helped rally their faithful to serve the needy, Morris said that it had been "an honor and a blessing" to speak with the Roman Pontiff. "The spiritual, moral, and material help of the Church and of Pope Benedict XVI represents a special blessing," he said.

The World Food Program describes itself as "the largest humanitarian organization in the world," furnishing help for the poor in 80 countries. Since its establishment in 1963 the program has provided $30 million in aid and 47 million tons of food assistance.
