Chinese underground Church rejoices over new cardinal February 22, 2006
The Pope's choice of Hong Kong's Bishop Joseph Zen as a cardinal has brought rejoicing to the Church in China, and particularly to underground Catholics, the AsiaNews service reports.
Bishop Zen’s appointment to become a cardinal-- the only Chinese cardinal under the age of 80-- was welcomed by Chinese Catholics as a great sign of hope. Speculation about his possible appointment had been circulating for some time, and on February 22 many Chinese Catholics spent the day glued to their satellite televisions or to the internet, awaiting confirmation of the appointment.
Bishop Wei Jingyi of Qiqihar, contacted by AsiaNews by phone, immediately exclaimed: “It’s a great joy!" Bishop Wei-- who is not recognized by the Chinese government-- said that Bishop Zen is "very trustworthy" and uncompromising in his dedication to the Catholic fatih.
