Sin paralyzes mankind, Pope tells audience February 20, 2006
Mankind is paralyzed by sin, which blocks the path to peace and healthy development, Pope Benedict XVI told his Sunday audience on February 19. But Christ provides the solution, the Pope assured the crowd in St. Peter's Square.
Speaking on the today's Gospel, which related Christ's healing of the paralytic, the Holy Father observed that this man is "an image of every human being." Wounded by Original Sin, men are "tied with cords of hatred, anger, envy, and the other sins, which little by little paralyze him," the Pope said. The results of this paralysis are evident in all the problems that afflict the world, he said.
"Paralyzed by sin, man needs the mercy of God," Pope Benedict continued. "Only the love of God and renew man's heart," and only through Christ's healing power can we overcome our weakness and disease. "The love of God is the true force to restore the world," the Pontiff concluded, reminding his audience that this love furnished the theme for his first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est.
