Vatican to release first coins with Pope Benedict's image December 02, 2005
The Vatican will strike the first coins bearing the image of Pope Benedict XVI on December 6.
The new coins will be struck in values of 5, 10, 20, and 50-euros. The 5- and 10-euro coins will be silver; the 20- and 50-euro pieces will be gold. There will also be a commemorative coinmarking the 20th World Youth Day, held in Cologne in August.
All of these coins will bear the bust of Pope Benedict, and the inscription: "Benedictus XVI P.M. Anno I-MMV" (BenoƮt XVI, Sovereign Pontiff, Year 1: 2005).
The first complete sets of the new coins carrying the image of Pope Benedict XVI will be placedon sale in the spring of 2006. The final coins of the pontificate of John Paul II were released after his death.
