Criminal gang cited in assault on Indian bishop's house November 11, 2005
Three people-- including a lawyer already facing trial in a murder case-- were arrested on November 10 in connection with last month's attack on a Catholic bishop's residence in India's southern Kerala state.
Police in Kerela said that are still seeking four other people who are suspected of involvement in the October 17 attack on the home of Bishop Vincent Samuel of Neyyattinkara. The arrests come just a few days after protest marches, held in Neyyattinkara and other towns around Kerela, demanding police action on the assault, in which a guard was seriously injured.
Those arrested have been identified with a local crime syndicate. Police believe that they were acting on behalf of the lawyer who was arraigned on November 10. On of the priests living in the bishop's residence had testified against the lawyer in a murder trial. Police believe that the assailants had come to attack that priest/witness, but were forced to leave after a security guard sounded the alarm.
