Sweden to become abortion haven? November 08, 2005

Sweden could unrestricted access to abortion for women from other countries, under the terms of a policy proposed by a government-sponsored commission.

"We suggest that foreign women be allowed to have abortions in Sweden," Eva Eriksson told the Associated Press. Eriksson was introducing a report, "Abortion in Sweden," which presented its proposals to the government for adoption next year.

Existing law in Sweden allows unrestricted access to abortion during the first 18 weeks of pregnancy-- but only to Swedish residents. The proposed policy would allow women from other countries to obtain abortions, provided only that they paid for the procedure themselves.

If adopted, the policy could make Sweden a haven for abortion, drawing women from countries where the procedure is banned.
