Vatican conference to assess post-conciliar religious life September 23, 2005

The Vatican's Congregation for Religious is organizing a symposium on the Vatican II document Perfectae Caritatis , to take place in Rome on September 26-27.

The symposium anticipates the 40th anniversary of the appearance of the Vatican II document, which was promulgated on October 28. Perfectae Caritatis called for the renewal of religious life, and the September conference is designed to aid reflection on how religious men and women can be "witnesses to the transfiguring presence of God," explained Archbishop Franc Rode, the prefect of the Congregation for Religious.

After Vatican II, Archbishop Rode observed, religious life saw "profound changes," and congregations of religious undertook "new styles of community life and apostolic service, profoundly modifying their own mode of existence and action in the Church and in the world." The symposium will assess those changes, and reflect on the future of religious life.
