Russian patriarch reaffirms demands on Vatican September 07, 2005

Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexei II reaffirmed his criticism of the Catholic Church in a meeting with the new Russian ambassador to the Holy See.

"The Patriarch reaffirmed the position the Russian Church has taken in recent years," during a meeting with the new envoy, Nikolai Sadchikov, the Moscow patriarchate has revealed. Patriarch Alexei complained that Catholic missionaries should not be active in the "canonical territories" of the Orthodox Church, and that the activities of the Ukrainian Catholic Church must be curtailed.

The Russian government has sought to promote better relations between the Orthodox Church and the Vatican, and has sought to smooth the way for a possible papal visit to Moscow. But Patriarch Alexei as consistently argued that the Vatican must curb "proselytizing" by Catholics in Russia and neighboring countries before he will agree to a papal visit, or a personal meeting with the Pontiff.
