First canonizations by Pope Benedict set for October September 06, 2005
Pope Benedict XVI will preside at the first canonization ceremonies of his pontificate, declaring 5 new saints for the universal Church, on October 23, Vatican Radio reports.
Pope Benedict has indicated that he will not preside at beatifications, but will lead canonization ceremonies, to preserve the distinction between the two. The five people scheduled for canonoization on October 23 are:
- a Ukrainian archbishop, Josef Bilczewski
- Ukrainian priest, Zygmunt Gorazdowski
- an Italian priest, Gaetano Cantaanoso
- an italian lay Franciscan, Felice da Nicosia
- a Chilen Jesuit priest, Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga
