Cardinal Sodano meets European parliament leader February 04, 2005
The president of the European parliament, Josep Borell Fontelles, met with Cardinal Angelo Sodano at the Vatican on February 4. Their conversation focused on the activities of the European Union.
While speaking about the role of the European Union as a "moral force," Josep Borell Fontelles also conveyed the wishes of the European parliament for the speedy recovery of Pope John Paul II.
Cardinal Sodano, the Vatican Secretary of State, was accompanied at the Vatican meeting by Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, the Secretary for Relations with States.
The European leader had originally been scheduled to meet with Pope John Paul prior to his conversation with Cardinal Sodano; that meeting was cancelled because of the Pope's illness.
Cardinal Sodano-- who is in regular contact with the Pope-- is scheduled to meet on Monday, February 8, with Condoleeza Rice, the new US Secretary of State. Rice is now in London, making diplomatic visits in Europe before a highly anticipated trip to the Holy Land.
