Legionaries of Christ found new Roman university October 01, 2004
The Legionaries of Christ order have announced the founding of the "European University of Rome," which will opens its doors to students in 2005. Father Paolo Scarafoni, vice-chancellor of the Pontifical University "Regina Apostolorum," the current university of the Legionaries in Rome, presented the future faculty members to the media on Friday.
The new university, recognized and accredited by the Italian government, will serve all Christian students or "those open to transcendent values," with a particular interest in living a life of service and aiming for excellence, Scarafoni said.
The new university, which will absorb the Regina Apostolorum, will offer four tracks for students: philosophy, history, psychology, and law. The university wants to offer its student an "integrated formation," said Father Scarafoni, and challenge them to work together for the building up of European culture with "detailed attention to the contribution of Christianity in all fields."
The current university Regina Apostolorum, which has 3,200 students, was opened in 1993. It a bioethics faculty, "the first in the world," according to the university, created "to answer the invitation of the Pope to promote a true culture of life." The courses will be integrated into the new curriculum of the European university, as well as the current theology curriculum.
The new university will be integrated into the network of 12 universities run by the Legionaries of Christ, most of which are in Latin America.
