Millennium celebration of Pope Sylvester II, "European man" May 10, 2004
The Pontifical Council for Culture is taking advantage of a millennium celebration for Pope Sylvester II in order to underline the importance of Christianity in the foundation of Europe.
On May 12, the Pontifical Council will close out the year-long commemoration of Pope Sylvester-- born Gilbert d'Aurillac-- who was among the outstanding figures of politics, science, and religion for his time. The Council will host a day-long seminar on May 12 dedicated to Sylvester II, putting him forward as an ideal of the "European man." Pope John Paul II will comment on Pope Sylvester's life during his regular Wednesday public audience on May 12, the Vatican has announced.
The year-long celebration of Pope Sylvester began on May 12, 2003-- the 1,000th anniversary of his death.
