Bishop O'Brien gets probation March 26, 2004

An Arizona court has sentenced former Phoenix Bishop Thomas O'Brien to four years of probation after his conviction in a fatal hit-and-run accident.

Bishop O'Brien, who resigned from the Phoenix diocese after being arrested for the crime, had faced a maximum sentence of three years in prison. Instead, he will avoid jail time if he complies with the conditions of supervised parole.

The bishop will also lose his driver's license for five years, and be required to perform 1,000 hours of community service.
