Beatification cause advances from Robert Schuman February 27, 2004

The cause for the beatification of Robert Schuman, the French political figure known as "the father of modern Europe, is rapidly advancing, with the investigation now moving to Rome.

A preliminary inquiry in the Diocese of Metz has concluded, and results will now be forwarded to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. That Congregation will thoroughly investigate Schuman's life and work, looking for evidence of "heroic virtue." If that evidence is confirmed, the authentication of a miracle would prepare the way for beatification.

The vision advanced by Robert Schuman (1886- 1963) of Europe as a "community of peoples" was instrumental in the founding of the European Union, and remains an important factor in the current debate over the Christian identity of the European community. Pope John Paul II has frequently cited the French political leader as a model of Christian involvement in the public sphere.
