Cardinal Sodano visits Kazakhstan May 16, 2003
Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican Secretary of State, is in Kazakhstan this week, meeting with that country's President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The cardinal's four-day visit is a response to Nazarbayev's invitation, as a way of commemorating the visit by Pope John Paul II to Kazakhstan in September 2001.
During his stay, the Vatican Secretary of State will speak with the Kazakh leader about plans for a world forum on religion, which is scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan later this year at Nazarbayev's initiative. That project took shape after discussion with Vatican officials during his visit to Rome earlier this year.
Cardinal Sodano will celebrate Mass in the cathedral of Astana, the nation's capital, on May 17, and meet with leaders of the country's Muslim and Orthodox communities. On Sunday, May 18, he will travel to the city of Karaganda, to preside at Mass and groundbreaking ceremonies for a new cathedral there.
