Accused Killer Of Missionaries Could Have Al Quaida Links January 02, 2003

SANA, Yemen, Jan 2, 03 (CWNews.com) - Yemeni officials said on Thursday that an Islamic militant accused of killing three US missionaries and another accused of shooting a leftist politician were linked to al Qaida and had planned to kill others.

Security officials said they had compiled a list of eight potential targets after interviewing the two men. Abed Abdul Razak Kamel is accused of killing the three missionaries at a charity hospital on Monday. Ali al-Jarallah is accused of killing Jarallah Omar, deputy leader of Yemen's Socialist Party, last week.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two men are believed to be part of a larger cell planning attacks on foreigners, journalists, and politicians. They also said they suspect at least Kamel is linked to al Quaida terrorist network.

Police detained five suspected militants on Thursday bringing to 30 the number of those arrested so far in connection with the two cases. So far, no charges have been filed and it was unclear how many of those arrested for questioning were believed to be directly linked to the alleged plot. Yemen says it is keeping the FBI informed, but that US agents are not allowed to question Kamel.
