Vatican Library Says Key Albanian Text Not Lost, But Misplaced August 29, 1996

TIRANA, Albania (CWN) - Officials of the Vatican Library dispelled fears that a monumental 16th century Albanian book was lost on Wednesday, saying the book just could not be found at the moment, according to the Albanian news agency ATA.

"Reports that the "Book of Mass' by Gjon Buzuku had been lost were untrue," ATA quoted Leonard Boyle, the Vatican Library prefect, as telling the Albanian embassy in Rome. The book is the earliest example of written Albanian, and would be a critical loss of national heritage, although four copies exist in the national library.

Boyle said he was sure the original copy of the book, the first major document published in the Albanian language in 1555, was in one of their pavilions and they had assigned three employees to find it.
