ELK, Poland (CWNews.com) -- Pope John Paul II traveled to Elk, a town in the economically distressed northeast of Poland, to deliver a June 8 address on the importance of caring for the poor.

Speaking to approximately 150,000 people outside the Elk cathedral on the fourth day of his visit to Poland, the Holy Father said: "Development and economic progress cannot be pursued regardless of the cost."

The Pope also recognized a large continent of Lithuanian pilgrims who had made the trip to Elk to join the Pope-- led by the country's President Valdas Adamkus. Speaking in Lithuanian, he urged the visitors, "Build the future of your country on the faith, for the good of the Church, of Europe, and of humanity."
