Website Review: The Order of Preachers (Dominicans)

A review based on: http://www.op.org/

Description

This site is the official international web presence of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans). It provides information on the Order's many branches, including the brothers, contemplative nuns, congregations of contemplative and apostolic sisters, lay persons in fraternities or secular institutes, and secular priests in fraternities.

While the site does provide extensive information on the Order and its history, unfortunately it also provides an example of an excellent religious order moving away from its founder's intentions. The site focuses on the material world, with sections on socio-ecomonic injustice and the UN, but with almost no mention of the preaching and evangelizing the Order was founded for. Though not all of the links and material provided at the site are bad, there is enough to warrant great caution.

N.B. This review is not meant to be a general judgment of the entire Dominican Order. Dominicans around the world are considerably varied in their approach and many are faithful to their founder and to the Church herself.

For some unknown reason various resources of the site are hidden and can only be found by searching. There is a section on Dominican saints that falls into this category.
