Also Called: May Wine

On St. Walburga's eve one might well anticipate the day to come by brewing the first Maibowle.

DIRECTIONS

Take 1 quart of strawberries, washed and hulled, sprinkle them with several tablespoons of powdered sugar, and steep them in 1 quart of good white wine. After three or four hours, place the berries and their liquor in a large punch bowl, place a large piece of ice in the center, and pour in 3 more bottles of white wine and 1 bottle of champagne. (The champagne can be replaced by soda water.) There are many classic and traditional bowlen in Germany, and peaches, pineapple, or waldmeister (woodruff) may be used instead of strawberries. Serve with a bit of the fruit in each punch glass.
