Catholic Recipe: Checkerboard Sandwiches
Cream cheese sandwiches are spruced up by giving a checkerboard design with white and whole wheat bread.
Spread softened butter or cream cheese between 1 whole wheat and 1 white slice, sandwich fashion. Spread softened butter or cream cheese between 2 sandwiches, alternating white and whole wheat bread; press firmly together; trim off crusts. After trimming the crusts, cut each block in 4 lengthwise strips. Stack 3 strips together with softened butter between, so that light and dark breads alternate to form checkerboard design.
