Catholic Recipe: Italian Bread Sticks

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 5 tablespoons warm water
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm milk

This recipe is part of the Sicilian tradition of the St. Joseph Altar.

DIRECTIONS

Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Stir yeast mixture into 1 cup flour and knead until smooth. Place in floured bowl; cover with damp cloth and let rise until double (about 60 minutes). Mix remaining cup flour, butter, salt and milk into a smooth paste. Place on floured board and add risen dough; mix and knead until smooth. Place in floured bowl; cover and let double (about 45 minutes). Knead until smooth. Divide into 24 parts, rolling each between hands into a rope six or seven inches long. Brush with milk and roll in sesame seeds. Place 1 inch apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake in 425° oven until brown, about 10 minutes.
