TROPE
In the Western rite a short series of words by way of antiphons added spontaneously in the liturgy of the Mass or the office sung in choir. Tropes were popular in the early Middle Ages byt gradually wnet out of vogue and were legislated out of existence by the 1570 revision of the Roman Missal. However, the Second Vatican Council now provides for their use during the Kyrie eleison of the Mass.
