STAG
A symbol of the Christian thirsting after the living waters of Christ's Word. Usually represented in pairs, the deer are refreshing themselves from the streams of water flowing from the Cross. In the words of the Psalm, "as a hart longs for the running streams, so longs my soul for you, my God" (Psalm 42). The stag appears in representations of St. Hubert and St. Eustace, patrons of hunters, also with St. Giles shown with his pet hind, and St. Aidan noted in English hagiology.
