SCROLL (symbol)
An emblem of wisdom and an early emblem of the Apostles. Though the crossed keys individualized St. Peter and the sword St. Paul, both of them, as well as the Evangelists, were often shown with a scroll. It is the emblem of their office of teaching. Elijah the prophet, who appeared in the Transfiguration, is also represented with a scroll.
