SCALA SANCTA
The twenty-eight marble steps, now covered with wood, leading to the papal chapel in the Lateran Palace. They are believed to be the steps of Pilate's praetorium, sanctified by the Savior by walking up them during his Passion. Brought to Rome by St. Helena, they are ascended by pilgrims on their knees.
